The Formula Explained

Batt Bags = (Area ÷ Coverage per Bag) × 1.10  |  Blown Bags = Area × Depth × 0.0118 × 1.05

For fiberglass batts, each bag or roll covers approximately 40 sq ft (R-13 through R-30) or 37 sq ft (R-38). The 10% waste factor accounts for cutting around joists, electrical boxes, and irregular framing. For blown-in insulation, coverage depends on depth: at 10.25 inches you achieve approximately R-38; at 13 inches, R-49. The calculator uses 0.0118 bags per sq ft per inch of depth as the coverage coefficient for standard blown-in cellulose or fiberglass.

Can I add insulation on top of existing insulation?
